Does a Wrap Damage Your Factory Paint?

By the WRPD team in Chatsworth, CA · · 5 min read

We hear this question in our Chatsworth shop almost every week, usually from someone with a car they really care about. The short answer is good news: a quality wrap on factory paint protects the paint underneath.

Here is why, and what we do to make sure your original finish looks just as good the day the wrap comes off as the day it went on.

A wrap works like a shield

Vinyl sits on top of your clear coat and takes the everyday hits your paint would normally take. Sun, light scratches from bags and zippers, water spots, and road grime all land on the film first.

That is why a lot of owners with leased cars and collector cars come to us. They get the color they want now, and the factory paint stays tucked away and preserved for later.

Factory paint is the perfect base

Original factory paint is baked on and fully cured, so it bonds with the clear coat really well. Quality wrap adhesives are designed to hold firmly on that surface and still release cleanly when it is time.

If a car has been repainted before, we take a look first and let you know how that surface will do. Being upfront about it is part of making sure you love the result.

How we keep your paint safe during the install

We cut film off the car with care, using knifeless tape in the spots where a blade would get close to the paint. Panels are cleaned and prepped by hand, and hardware comes off where it gives a cleaner finish.

Everything happens indoors at our shop on Eton Avenue, so the car stays out of the dust and wind while we work.

Clean removal when you are ready

When you want your factory color back or a new wrap, we warm the film and peel it off slowly so the adhesive lets go evenly. Any leftover residue gets cleaned up and the paint is ready to shine again.

Many customers are surprised at how fresh the paint looks after a few years under a wrap. It has been protected the whole time.

Common questions

Will a wrap protect my paint from rock chips?+

Vinyl helps with light scuffs and everyday wear. For serious rock chip protection on the front of the car, pairing a wrap with paint protection film is the way to go.

Can I wrap a car that has been repainted?+

Often yes. We inspect the paint first and let you know exactly what to expect before we start.

Is a wrap a good idea on a leased car?+

It is a great option. You get to customize the car and keep the factory paint protected for when you turn it in.
